🦖 A NEW MEGARAPTOR HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN EUROPE!
What if one of the most important dinosaur discoveries of the year wasn’t found in a newly excavated fossil bed, but inside a museum collection where it had been sitting for more than 100 years?
Meet Invictibellatrix amberina, a newly described predatory dinosaur from the Isle of Wight in England!
Collected all the way back in 1924, this fossil was recently reexamined using modern CT scanning and evolutionary analysis. What researchers discovered was extraordinary: the first definitive evidence of a megaraptoran dinosaur living in Europe!
Megaraptorans were a fascinating group of theropods known for their long arms, powerful hands, and enormous curved claws. Some later members grew into enormous predators, and their evolutionary history has long puzzled paleontologists.
In this episode of Prehistoric Life, we’re exploring this remarkable discovery, examining what made Invictibellatrix unique, and investigating how this dinosaur could change our understanding of megaraptoran evolution and their spread across the ancient world.
🦴 IN THIS EPISODE:
* How a fossil collected in 1924 became a new dinosaur discovery
* Meet Invictibellatrix amberina
* What exactly were megaraptorans?
* Their unusual anatomy, long arms, and enormous claws
* How CT scanning helped identify this new species
* Why this is the first definitive megaraptoran discovered in Europe
* How megaraptorans spread across the ancient continents
* What happened to these predators during the Late Cretaceous
* Could Invictibellatrix have had feathers?
This discovery is another reminder that museum collections are full of scientific potential. Sometimes, the next major dinosaur discovery isn’t waiting to be excavated. It’s already been sitting in a museum for generations!
