In this episode, we sit down with Holger Petermann, a paleontologist at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, to talk about his research on dinosaurs, ancient ecosystems, and the mass extinction that reshaped life on Earth.Dr. Petermann has been involved in groundbreaking research on fossils from the Denver Basin, including studies of reptiles, crocodilians, and ecosystems surrounding the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event—the asteroid impact that ended the age of dinosaurs. His work also helped analyze a remarkable discovery: a ~67.5-million-year-old dinosaur fossil discovered hundreds of feet beneath Denver during a geothermal drilling project, one of the most unusual dinosaur finds ever recorded. In this interview we discuss:
🦖 What it’s like to work as a professional paleontologist
🌍 Fossils that reveal how ecosystems changed after the dinosaur extinction
🦎 Research on ancient reptiles and vertebrates from the Denver Basin
🔬 How scientists study fossils to reconstruct life millions of years agoIf you enjoy paleontology, dinosaurs, and deep-time science, this conversation is packed with insights from someone actively uncovering Earth’s prehistoric past.
